Sailing on the E’ala on Kaneohe Bay

This post is dedicated to the Hokule’a’s voyage and Hawaiian Renaissance from 1976 to now that culminates in its return from the 3 year voyage around the world that will bring the canoe home in less than two weeks. It is also dedicated to my late teacher, windsurfing and kitesurfing friend Ka’au McKenney.

Germany and Europe was a dark place in the mid/late 70’s. The urban guerrilla and the state’s response created a paranoid society with limited perspectives for the young and adventurous, not unlike the US after 9.11.  I dropped out of college, joined one of the first German punk rock bands and landed at JFK with a one way ticket on May 5th 1978 and immersed my self in New York’s burgeoning new rock’n roll scene. After 10 years in New York, two years in the USVI and 7 years on Oahu teaching windsurfing and Taiji, I decided to go back to school. My first class at Windward Community College was the two semester course on Polynesian Voyaging. During the Tues/Thur class we learned about celestial navigation, marine biology, geology, biology and Hawaiian studies. The Saturday labs involved working on the Hokule’a and lots of sailing, ultimately to Molokai and back. Here is my lab report from fall 1997. The spring semester will be covered in the next blog. What Goes On – The Amazing – The Pathetic and The Opportunity

What goes on in your heart – what goes on in your mind (Lou Reed)? the spiritual and the mundane live right next to each other and can be one and the same. I have written about the spiritual aspect of the Velvet Underground elsewhere, but here is what goes on in my heart and mind now. This year I have taught 5 or 6 classes on Ayurvedic cooking using principles that go back 5 000 years to the Vedas, and are designed to create the food that is healthy, great tasting and helps create balance in specific ways tailored for you now. Most of these classes were held at my humble semi-out-door kitchen on the beautiful shores of Kaneohe Bay. Ayurveda is not an abstract concept, but adjusts to your singular daily needs. Recently I cooked a variation of the basic ayurvedic rice, beans and vegetable stew called kitchadi for a family every day for a week.  The result of a greatly improved digestive system especially for the person who was suffering the most from digestive problems before.

Last month, I had the pleasure of teaching an Ayurvedic cooking class at the Honolulu Down to Earth.  The class was held in DTE’s community room kitchen and fully equipped with cameras and projection of the cooking process.  The attendees were genuinely curious and open minded group which made for a fun and interesting class.  A great break through came when I taught a two day class on Maui organized by Ayurvedic doctor Sylvia Welchel.  The Maui classes consisted of 15 women that were highly motivated and familiar with concepts of holistic medicine, one of them being a chef.  I was very excited with the high vibration of the class.

I had asked a women, whom I’ll call Suzanne, to help steer a mix of ghee and spices. I noticed something in her eyes which will remain unspoken. Later I noticed that Suzanne was missing and thought that she had gone to the bathroom.  Upon her return, I noticed a different glimmer in her eyes but didn’t think much more about it, being that I was quite busy teaching and cooking, while engaging in dialogue with everyone.

After class Sylvia, my collaborator and I sat down and she asked me if I knew what had happened to Suzanne. This is her story. Suzanne had lost her sense of smell as a child, caused by her mother’s incessant smoking. She never cooked and had developed a heavy eating disorder. During the cooking, Suzanne had had a breakdown and breakthrough. Sylvia took her into her treatment room. Suzanne was able to “feel the smell of the cooking food.” Indeed, a major breakthrough. My answer was, “if this is the only outcome of the whole weekend, all the prep, shopping, flying to Maui, etc it would still be more than amazing. If that would be the only thing I ever did, it would be ok.

Now, my landlord, who studied to be a doctor and then had a heart attack likes to get his rent check on time. He is not of the belief that I should live for free in his house because I do such good things and get him the newspaper most days. He is in a wheelchair. Living in Hawaii has its price. My rent is $ 1590.-, which after living here for eight years, I can almost consider a bargain. This is what I had to do to pay rent this month. Get as much cash advance from my second credit card, the first one is already maxed out, put in the cash I had made the day before for a private cooking class, and use my $ 500 ‘covercheck’ that covers bounced  checks. All this creates more interest and puts me deeper into depth. I have applied for social security and will get about $ 500 monthly, once it gets through and I will probably get Medicaid 2, and I might have health insurance for the first time in 17 years. For those of you who don’t know, I make my living through selling art, teaching art, yoga, taiji and ayurvedic cooking, house painting and occasionally I sell one of the NYN 7′ re-issue. Recently a gallery has sold a painting of mine on layaway. That is great. Really? Layaway? I didn’t know that existed still and I have no idea when I get paid. Another gallery has more than $ 20 000 worth of my paintings. I also have a good amount of paintings and prints at my house. Needless to say, this is the last month I can pull this off, because now everything is maxed out. Pathetic, ridiculous and stressful. I am not asking for charity. So how do you help an artist? Buy her/his art.

We have used Alice Neel as band name for a few years. When Will Williams II Stephen Niles and I formed the band, being all painters the name fell into our laps via Stephen’s great mind. Here is a clip with the real Alice: Inside New York’s Art World: Alice Neel. Music is on hiatus for the moment. When I start a new band there will be a new name.

This post is a continuation of my Allow Surrender Courage Ease entry. The content of the cards reflect my spiritual practice.

At the current moment there are about 30 words or sentences with more coming on. You’ll find a list below. Each print consists of two layers. The first layers derives from test and ghost prints that are cut to size and then printed with the word(s) on top. So, each print is unique.

The word(s) are carved into 1/4″ plywood, then printed on top of the ghost or test print. After drying the 4×6 cards are mounted on 7×10 card stock, which is folded in half to achieve the standard 5×7 folded cards. Finally, each card is put into a clear envelope together with a mailing envelope.

There are a fe steps before carving or cutting the block. Once you have a design you transfer it to the block or draw it on directly. One has to consider the block has to be carved as the reverse or backwards image of what one wants to see in the print.

Printing is fun and messy if one doesn’t watch out. The ink has a tendency to travel from block to hand to apron to paper or in any other possibility that you can imagine and some you can’t.

High Vibrations is the aim.

  1. ALLOW – Sometimes all we have to do is step back, relax and allow the good things in life come to us

  10. 4 GIVE – Give and forgive. It is essential to forgive in order for liberation to take place. Most of all forgive your self.
  11. EASE – Ease up. When we do things with EASE, we are most successful.
  12. JOY – Especially in trying times it serves us well to express joy. Joy is our essential nature.
  13. LOVE – Be love, love more, love passionately, love life.
  14. MAKE IT FUNKY – What can I say? Bring some funk into your life, like you just don’t care. Make it Funky
  15. THINGS ALWAYS WORK OUT… Make it your mantra. Think about it.
  16. PLAY – God is happiest when the children are at play.
  17. SURRENDER – Surrender to what you can’t control – Create what you can. Surrender to LOVE.
  18. TRUST – Trust someone or something, best: “Trust your self”
  19. YES – Say yes to life.
  20. BLISS – Follow your bliss.
  21. Inspire – Inspire someone. Lead by example.
  22. Free – We are all meant to be free in body and mind.
  23. IMAGINE – Imagine the impossible, the unthinkable.
  24. Dream – Hang on to your dreams. Hang on to Your Self.
  25. GRACE – Isn’t that what we all aim for, doing things gracefully, reaching a state of grace?

When humans express their awe of creation, or the human spirit, in caves, on rocks, carving wood or stone, drawing, painting dancing, music or theatre we end up calling it art. Art and spirituality have always been tightly linked. Matisse called all art spiritual. Over the years, I have realized that much of my art comes straight from my daily practice of self realization.

Here is an evolving set of post- and greeting cards to inspire you and your family and friends. They are carved in wood and printed on BFK printing paper using a pile of test prints,  cut up to size and printed with the new image on top, unplanned collaboration between the old cut-up image and the new block. This leads to surprising images, each one unique.

As flowing as the images came into being as difficult it is to develop these into sellable commodities. The hand carved and printed process takes time, card stock in the desired size was not available so far, so I had to cut up each card to the desired 10″ x 7″ then fold to reach 5″ x 7″ for which envelopes are commercially available. You can imagine, that each card should fetch ca $ 30 to make it financially viable. What do you suggest?

One way would be to scan them and print them digitally, and I might do that if I can connect to a business that sells them en masse. Meanwhile, I am willing to sell packages of 5 or 10. At what price? What comes to your mind?  What would make you a happy customer?

The Risograph Rocks

On Black Friday as part of our annual printsale, I had the opportunity to pull some prints, with the help of Tiny Splendor’s …….. on the newly purchased Risograph printer, which the Honolulu Printmakers now owns. The aesthetic of the Risograph is somewhere between a silkscreen and a photocopy, so I used some of my 80’s band posters to test the machine, especially since I am considering to create a limited edition artist book on my first two years in New York (78-80), planning to print it on this machine.

“The Risograph is a high-speed digital printing system manufactured by the Riso Kagaku Corporation and was designed mainly for high-volume photocopyingand printing. It was released in Japan in August 1986. It is sometimes called a digital duplicator or printer-duplicator, as newer models can be used as a network printer as well as a stand-alone duplicator. When printing or copying many duplicates (generally more than 20)[attribution needed] of the same content, it is typically far less expensive per page than a conventional photocopier, laser printer, or inkjet printer. Printing historian Rick O’Connor has debated that the original, and thus correct, name for the device is RISSO and not RISO. This debate spawns from the notion that an extra ‘S’ is added because the inventor’s wife found it more pleasing to the ears.” Wipikedia

“The underlying technology is very similar to a mimeograph. It brings together several processes which were previously carried out manually, for example using the Riso Print Gocco system or the Gestetner system.

The original is scanned through the machine and a master is created, by means of tiny heat spots on a thermal plate burning voids (corresponding to image areas) in a master sheet. This master is then wrapped around a drum and ink is forced through the voids in the master. The paper runs flat through the machine while the drum rotates at high speed to create each image on the paper.” Wipikedia

Another ABC No Rio show, this time with the short lived Festival of Patience, ca 81-82. This might have been the only show we did, besides recording a new wave pop song demo. 2 color risograph reproduction. I re-used the festival of patience theme for my MFA thesis exhibition at the University of Hawaii in 2008.

These band posters were done between 1981 and 1985 for my bands Festival of Patience (81-82), NADA (82-83) and East of Eden (84-87) as cut and paste photocopies. Typically a risograph comes with several color drums and one can print two colors at the same time. The registration is not perfect in these prints. At the present time I do not know if that can be achieved. The effect is something like a drop shadow and gives it a little excitement. It works less well with fine details.

East of Eden was my overall most productive band and lasted all the way from January 1984 to 87/88 with different lineups. I wrote all the songs and did the lead singing. We produced a 7″ single and an 12″ full LP on Moon Records and realized several videos. This is one of my favorite posters. I love the attitude of the angel, a gargoyle at Notre Dame, and the moniker Rock’n Roll Revelation expresses the spiritual element of Rock’n Roll that I see as the driver of much of my work. The poster remerges in my rock’n roll wood block prints.

The risograph has fallen out of favor in commercial applications, but is popular with small independent presses, fanzines, artists who publish limited edition artist books, etc. You can scan an image and create a master or you can print from a digital file. It is contemporary with a cool look that reminds us of the punk DIY philosophy, just like a simple rock’n roll song.

Basic necessities are covered, we enjoy a certain amount of luxuries, but somehow, no matter what we accomplish or own we cannot escape a feeling of emptiness. Let us replace every step with very breath in Bryan Ferry’s lyrics, and it describes exactly how many of us live day by day, short shallow breaths that indeed take us further from heaven and quicker to our graves, short shallow breaths that produce more fear, stressed, not relaxed.

Some indigenous cultures claim that each human being is born with a certain amount of breaths, once the number is reached we die. True or not, it is an interesting concept. Let us all slow down and take a deep breath.

For 35 years I have studied meditation, qi gong, taiji and for the past 9 years, yoga, including meditation and pranayama. Every morning I sit in the dark and do breathing exercises (pranayama) for about 30 minutes before I meditate. Pranayama, the cultivation of prana (life-force energy, like qi, ki, mana) includes very vigorous breathing, holding the breath, holding the breathing-out position, breathing in and out of alternate nostrils and moving the stomach in and out, sideways and circular, while keeping the outbreath position. It stimulates digestion, is heating or cooling, depending on which one we practice. It calms the mind, helps us focus and in my own experience regulates an irregular heartbeat, but most of all it helped me to become aware of my breath in the most profound way.

 

“In Ayurveda the vital life force that animates all beings is known as prana. Without prana we would not be able to enjoy and experience pleasure because it is this life force that gives us the ability to perceive. All perception through the five senses is governed by prana. Being such an important element of life, yoga has developed a science for controlling and expanding this vital life force called pranayama.”

We do not stop thinking when we meditate, at least I don’t, but when we are aware of our breath we can let our thoughts flow by and don’t become attached to a chain of thoughts. Instead we notice how the breath slows down more and more, especially when we practice regularly. We notice the ever-expanding space between breaths. Sometimes we might not even remember what comes next. Am I going to breathe in or out? Not that is does really matter, but here we are in the moment. This is the moment were transformation can occur and we feel the possibility that every breath can indeed take us closer to heaven. Does this lengthen our lives? Maybe, but I promise that it will greatly increase the quality of yours.

Many mornings when I sit doing pranayama or meditation, the thought pops into my mind that, “Wow, I am actually taking the longest breath that I have ever taken.” At the end of In Every Dream Home a Heartache, Bryan Ferry blows up a rubber doll, his silent companion, and once his breath is inside her, she blows his mind. A wild guitar rave-up follows and ends the song. During pranayama and meditation I become acutely aware, how my breath actually holds my entire body, my being, up. Once the last breath is exhaled, the body will collapse and slowly disintegrate. It just blows my mind.

with-gicless-longFor the art lover with a modest budget the multiple is a fantastic way to own a piece of art without busting the bank. For the artist whose work doesn’t sell at high prices or often enough, the multiple is a good way to augment sales. Following Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, artist’s multiples became a subversive art-form and has become a sort of more democratic object of art used by various artists of greater or lesser fame including Joseph Beuys, Dieter Roth in the 70’s. Tracy Enim and Sarah Lucas even created a multiple store in the 90’s. Today one can find many reproductions of paintings and drawings as giclees or prints, also industrially produced sculptures. Many, but not all multiples are produced in limited editions, signed and numbered.

Just Like Dresden 45/Headliner, New York Niggers, NYN Records, 474 Greenwich ST, NYC 10012, vinyl 7″ 45 RPM in white dust-sleeve.                                                                Re-Issue, 7″ vinyl 45 RPM with letterpress two color cover and plastic sleeve. 500 pressed, 250 with letter press cover hand numbered 1, 2, 3…/250, 2008.                     The original 1000 were produced by Leo Faison and Dieter Runge in 1979 and have sold on the secondary market for up to $ 1 000. The cover of the Just Like Dresden 45 side of the re-issue is based on an oil painting The Bombing, oil on linen, 84″ x 66″,  Dieter Runge 2007/8 while the cover of the Headliner side is a collage of the various band members. Just Like Dresden 45 is the first song I wrote and the record is considered by many as one of the finest of its period and has developed somewhat of a cult following as is obvious by the price it fetches. This hand numbered limited re-issue with its unique cover printed with an outdated printing method is a true multiple with an almost guaranteed potential to increase in value. The record, lyrics and photos have been part of a museum exhibition: SCHLACHTHOF 5, DRESDEN’S DESTRUCTION IN LITERARY DOCUMENTS, alongside eminent artists as Kurt Vonnegut and Martin Walser. The continuous interest in the record is of course partially fueled by the name of the band as well as the name and theme of the song, which none of the rock’n roll protagonists dreamed of at the time. To make sense of this vital and creative chapter in my life, of Rock’n Roll and New York City, to set the record straight, I am working on a memoir about it.

The original is loosely painted with thick brushstrokes as well as thinner layers using a limited palette of black, white, yellow, red and gold. I have spend many years on the water sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing reading and studying the surface for angles, gusts of wind, direction of waves, current or just feeling the light reflected back at me. I started to paint water surfaces in the early 2000’s and feel that I do own this subject. The original painting flew out of the studio and this multiple is powerful in small or large sizes. On request, I will paint directly on top of the giclee, thus creating another “original,” of sorts.

“One Hundred Views of Taiji” fine art print, 18″ x 24″

  1. “100 Views of Taiji”, fine art print 18″ x 24″ of the original 100 paintings 8″x 10″ oil on canvas. When I first started taiji quan in 1982 I thought, wow, this is what I have been looking for my whole life. Now, after 34 years and having studied with three distinguished masters and I still practice and teach taiji. In the summer of 2003 I followed the taiji form and used small 1 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ black and white photographs from my master’s grandfather, Tung Ying Jie’s Red Book as inspiration. I painted one 8″ x 10″ canvas per day. All 100 original paintings were exhibited in Honolulu’s Chinatown twice and at the University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library. The paintings are now in private collections in Hawaii, Hong Kong, New York, Berlin, Montreal and other places. The fine art print is  sprayed with a protective and anti-fungal coat, hand numbered and signed by the artist.

While the Velvet Underground did hang out and collaborated with Andy Warhol, their songs and sound was fully developed when they met Andy, and it is Roxy Music who I truly consider the first fully ‘warholian’  rock’n roll band.    This fine art digital print (giclee, see below) of all 100 oil paintings is now available directly from the artist. Archival ink on archival paper, 18″x 24″.

It is available in three versions, 1. just the print on paper, shipped in a roll, 2. mounted on 1/4 foam, sprayed with an archival grade UV- anti fungal protective coating. and a piece of hardware in the back for easy hanging and 3. mounted in a floating wood frame. This includes the sprayed coat and the wire for hanging. All prints are numbered and signed by the artist and will come with a certificate of authenticity.

“This is what I have been looking for my whole life,” is what I felt when I first experienced taiji in New York City in the spring of 1982. I have studied and practiced taiji since then. My main teachers have been Mantak Chia and T.K. Shieh in New York, and since early 1991 Dong Zeng-Chen and Alex Dong in Hawaii. I have participated in many taiji camps and travelled to China and Hong Kong four times. I teach taiji on Oahu’s Windward Side since 1992 and some of the same students are still with me today.

Taiji-quan is a martial art that developed about 300 years ago, but has its roots much further back and is based on the Daoist theory of the ever changing dynamic relationship between yin and yang. By now it “has established itself as one of the world’s major sciences of self-cultivation. By fusing movement and metaphysics, it has taken its place alongside India’s yoga and the great systems of meditation which have arisen from time immemorial in all places.”  Douglas Wile

Around 2000  I begun to explore taiji through drawings, woodcuts and oil paintings, trying to capture its energy. Just like my ocean paintings I am lured by the subjects of my passions, taiji, yoga, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming…, to delve deeper through art.

“100 VIEWS of TAIJI” , oil on canvas, 8″ x 10.” In the summer of 2003 I painted 100 small canvases from the taiji long form as inspired by the 1 1/2″ x 2 3/2″ big black and white photographs in Tung Chen-Chieh’s Red Book and my own years of practice. Old black and white photos are ever fascinating and besides the dynamic form of my teacher’s grandfather I was also drawn to the aesthetic of the simple studio set up and the shadows on the folds of the curtain. I assume these photos were taken in the late 40’s, but stand to be corrected.

The premise was, to create one hundred paintings, using oil on canvas and develop as many different approaches as I could muster, trying to express the energy and spirit of taiji. I painted one or more a day and was done by the time school started again in the fall. 98 of them were painted in one setting. Only two of them took some adjustment. #45 did not work so I scraped the paint off and voila, there was a ghost image left. Just perfect, the energy left in the room, once the master had moved on. I added a few broad strokes to # 100 in a second session. Since I painted the poses in the order they appear in the taiji set, the taiji adept can follow the form and you can see how my approach evolved.

Previously, I had done a series of pastel drawings on taiji in Ron Kowalke‘s drawing class at the University of Hawaii.

The ” 100 VIEWS OF TAIJI’ were shown in Honolulu’s Chinatown twice, at the Hamilton Library at UH Manoa, and selected pieces were shown in Hong Kong at the Dong Family Taiji gathering in 2007. Now 60 of them are in private collection in Berlin and the rest are in Hong Kong, New York, Montreal, Honolulu, Makawao, Kula and other places.

Giclée (/ʒiːˈkleɪ/ zhee-KLAY or /dʒiːˈkleɪ/) is a neologism coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made on inkjet printers. The name originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the late 1980s but has since come to mean any inkjet print (Wipikidia).

Taiji-quan literally means “Supreme Ultimate Boxing and is an internal martial art. It is practiced in different forms and uses weapons like staff, sticks and swords or push-hands with a partner. in this video I demonstrate the taiji dao, the broadsword, which represents the yang energy or the tiger.

“The Meaning of the Taiji symbol lies in the mutual production of yin and yang, the complementary exchange of hard and soft, the thousand changes and ten thousand transformations. This is the basis of taiji quan.” Douglas Wile

As Inspiration for the name “One Hundred Views of Taiji” I give credit to the Japanese printmaker Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and Hokusai’s even more famous series on Mount Fuji.

To the different spelling: Taiji Quan = Tai Chi Chuan like Bejing and Peking or Mumbay and Bombay, like  Qi Gong and Chi Kung, like Dong and Tung.

Lineage: Tung Ying Chieh was one of the main disciples of Yang Chen Fu, the founder of Yang style taiji, Tung Fu Ling was his son and Jasmine Tung his daughter. Dong Zeng Chen and Tung Kai Ying are Tung Fu Ling’s sons. Alex Dong is Dong Zeng Chen’s son and Tung Chen Wei is Tung Kai Ying’s son. Besides having studied with Dong Zeng Chen and Alex Dong, I had also the pleasure to travel or hang out with Tung Kai Ying, Jasmine Tung and Tung Chen Wei in China, Hong Hong and on Oahu. The Tung/Dong family taiji is known for its grace, softness, dynamic power and martial prowess. It is said that you first must develop softness in order to develop power. If you have softness an oponent is not able to touch you.

Addition August 2016: A few days ago my taiji friend Sylvain Deschenes from the Montreal Taiji Club send me this photo standing next to the late Jasmine Tung in front of the “100 Views” at my former home on Kailua’s Pu’ukani Pl, taken on March 1st 2005. Jasmine Tung was in Hawaii to do research on a book about her father Tung Ying Chieh. Aunt Jasmine as I called her was a graceful and inspirational and well respected taiji master. She stayed at a b&b next door and I was fortunate to hang out, take walks on the beach and hike with her. I had also travelled with her in China and participated in a Don/Tung family gathering in Hong Hong in 2007. Several of the above paintings ended up in her possession.

Making Art with Mr. Dieter

Scratchboard print – unknown artist – the interesting experience of using words in relief printing  is that on the board, the words have to be carved or scratched backwards.

Can art be taught? We can certainly help someone with technique, perspective, materials, focus and more than anything, encouragement to unfurl the artist within. I believe that anyone can be an artist. Unfortunately many of us are told, ” what are you doing? You don’t have any talent, blah blah, woof woof…..” At a young age, we often take these comments for the truth and internalize them. As result, we cut ourselves off from any further development of our creativity. All children love art and the enthusiasm at the kinder-garden or pre-school age is often boundless, then by the fourth to sixth grade a tightening up or disinterest has sadly set in already. Some students though remain connected to their drive to create. These students run with the suggestions given, expand on their own creativity and produce amazing pieces of art. My philosophy is to offer kids, interesting projects, provide them with and help to handle materials, point out a few things and otherwise stay out of the way of their imagination. If they didn’t dig deep enough I try to encourage them to go further and if they are ready, I  nudge them towards developing a critical eye for their surroundings and their own work.

There are several levels of trust that help in the approach to making art. The relationship between student and teacher and the trust within ourselves that we can create. Some kids are confident in their abilities while others can be greatly helped by the teacher’s attention, kindness and encouragement. Teaching kids for a year has shown me how the trust the student develops in the teacher builds confidence in the young artist. Taking away the fear of failure, learning that not every project has to be great and that even mistakes can lead to new turns and discoveries are other elements that I emphasize in the art making process.

Save the Rays – poster contest – Henry 5th Gr

When I first started teaching at the elementary school, I used some exercises that are commonly taught in the college level, like color wheel, color bars, gradation, color theory and mixing. I adjusted it to the different grade levels. Generally the students took to it very well. I kept referring to it throughout the year, reinforcing what they learned. Kids often like to do simple things, especially when it leads to new discoveries. I also noticed that the tendency to rely on the computer versus their own imagination increases which each grade. Of course the computer had a valid and useful place in art making, but in 6th grade the answer to the question as how to learn to draw a tree was: “On the internet.” I kept encouraging the students to look outside to see if trees were really drawn with a straight edge. I did take the students onto the field to look at and draw trees and mountains. This activity can be increased.

Scratchboard print on paper, Elsa Vasquez 4th Gr. I was especially impressed by this print, since the scratchboard does not lend itself to fine lines.

All kids were excited by the technique of printmaking and some of the work blew my mind. Scratchboards is great for this purpose. No knifes involved.

During grades K-2, most kids relish to make art, then with every grade the enthusiasm wanes for some kids. By 5th and 6th grade the fear of experimentation and failure has settled in and this is sad. By the 5th grade some attitudes have hardened so much that the student has partially shut down to new experiences. This is sad, but with individual attention, a sensitive approach, a surprise turn,  some of these students can be reached, and can open up again.

During the year I taught at the Elementary School level we participated in three poster contests, two local, and one national. I am proud to say the we cleaned up in one of the local contests and and won 14 awards during the “Save the Rays” national contest. Of course art isn’t really a contest, but kids also do like to compete (not all) and an art contest can energize them tremendously. My teaching experiences range from teaching senior citizens,  guest teaching printmaking at Horace Mann School in NYC, the AHAA School For The Arts in Telluride CO and other workshops. I co-taught a 300 level course at the University of Hawaii Manoa Psychology Department called Art and Consciousness. Friend’s kids of all ages visiting my studio are happy to be provided with crayons, pencil, paint and paper and let their imagination fly. Several teenagers and young adults have stayed at my house/studio working along with me or on their own, drawing, painting or printmaking. As a former president and current board member of the Honolulu Printmakers I have participated in many outreach activities involving kids. The year of teaching at the Elementary School level has deepened my knowledge of how kids make art, what they can’t and what they can do.

And…… just in case you didn’t know, even if you’re bad at art, making art can reduce stress.

“Embrace mistakes” is something I tell the students. You never know where it might lead you.
